Everest, director Baltasar Kormákur‘s latest film, premieres at the Venice film festival next Wednesday, 2nd of September. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Keira Knightley, Jason Clarke and Emily Watson and tells of the events surrounding the 1996 Mount Everest disaster when a group of mountaineers were hit by a severe snowstorm.

Originally the film was to be shot in Iceland but, according to Vanity Fair, the glaciers in Iceland were too black from volcanic ash to pass off as Everest, instead the movie was shot in the Italian Dolomites, often in harsh weather conditions. At one point, an avalanche wiped out the set,

“A lot of the people on set - the actors and crew - were afraid they might not be able to pull through it. There were a couple of breakdowns on the way. But it also bonded people together,” the director told Screen Daily. Adding:“When I came down, my wife said she’d never seen me like that.“
