Photography | Photographer’s Long Exposures Show Heavy Surveillance for APEC Summit

A photographer managed to capture the extensive aerial surveillance operation during the APEC summit in San Francisco recently through a stunning image created by merging 150 long exposure photographs. Ian Servin, who is both a pilot and a photographer, witnessed the presence of numerous aircraft from various U.S. law enforcement agencies circling above the city during the high-profile summit, which included a visit by President Xi of China.

"California Highway Patrol deployed helicopters at lower altitudes and had fixed-wing aircraft positioned higher up," Servin informed PetaPixel. "Several federal agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security with helicopters and FBI utilizing fixed-wing aircraft, were also involved."

Observing from his apartment in Oakland, Servin used a Sony a7 III camera equipped with a 50mm lens to capture prolonged exposures of the night sky, juxtaposed with the illuminated cityscape below. "I've attempted to capture longer exposure shots of aircraft orbiting previously, but the results were not satisfactory. Given the substantial number of aircraft involved this time, I thought this attempt might yield better results," he explained.

"I wasn't entirely certain how it would turn out. I adjusted my camera settings to a 30-second shutter speed, activated the built-in timer, and let it expose for a couple of hours."
