Mountain Filming

A mountain film is a type of movie that concentrates on mountaineering, particularly the conflict between man and environment. In addition to ordinary adventure, the heroes who climb a mountain return altered, typically acquiring knowledge and insight.

The first mountain film, which chronicled American climber Frank Ormiston-Smith's ascent of Mont Blanc, was released in 1903; however, German Bergfilme (plural: Bergfilm), which were produced in the 1920s, are the ones most commonly associated with the genre. German mountain movies are compared to American westerns as an indigenous national or cultural genre by certain critics.

Dr. Arnold Fanck was the most significant director of mountain movies.
