Photography | ‘Photographers should be risk takers’

An exhibit at the Location Nepal office in Mandikatar showcases the photographic works of Gautam Dhimal, a fashion photographer, featuring life-size images of well-known Nepali models Sabita Karki and Aastha Pokharel. The display highlights Dhimal's fashion shoot in Mustang back in 2019, capturing the essence of this unique venture. Gautam Dhimal, the CEO of Location Nepal, considers this exhibit a groundbreaking step in Nepali fashion photography. Concurrently, he introduced his fashion photography book, 'Himalayan Fashion Adventure,' presenting visuals from the Mustang project. In a conversation with Post's Ankit Khadgi, Dhimal reflects on his career, the genesis of his recent book and exhibition, and Nepal's potential as a hub for photography and filmmaking.

Dhimal’s journey into photography and filmmaking began through his father's involvement in film production. His initial passion for filmmaking eventually evolved into a love for photography. Although his photography journey officially commenced in 2012, it wasn't until a fashion designer approached him for a shoot that he ventured into professional photography. The exhibition and book stemmed from Dhimal's desire to capture the majestic landscapes of Mustang. He realized this vision through a fashion photoshoot in the region in collaboration with fashion designer Tej Maya Pun. Both the book and exhibit aim to showcase the limitless potential of fashion photography in Nepal, serving as a documentation of this uncharted territory. Executing a professional photoshoot in Mustang was no easy feat due to the region's high altitude and unpredictable weather. Despite the challenges, Dhimal’s production team ensured preparedness with portable amenities, medical support, and accommodations for the crew, highlighting the resilience and commitment behind the captured moments.

Dhimal believes his book can inspire individuals in the fashion industry to explore diverse presentation mediums. Moreover, he hopes it will encourage photographers to creatively utilize Nepal’s stunning landscapes, merging different photography genres for innovative expressions. As the CEO of Location Nepal, Dhimal aims to attract international filmmakers and elevate Nepal's status as a sought-after filmmaking destination. His advice for aspiring photographers is to embrace risk-taking and resilience, as failures pave the way for learning and growth. He encourages them never to relent in their pursuit of excellence, emphasizing that perseverance is key to achieving success in the realm of photography.
