Pre-Production in Nepal | Filming to begin in Akron for Bhutanese refugee story 'Rubber City'

In the upcoming month, a team of filmmakers based in Akron will be shooting a drama that draws inspiration from the hardships faced by Bhutanese refugees. This narrative resonates across various immigrant communities worldwide. Auditions for "Rubber City," the film's title, took place in Akron recently, encompassing not only actors but also singers and musicians. The storyline revolves around three generations of Bhutanese immigrants who've made Akron their home, exploring their quest for identity in a new land. The film stems from the vision of Binod Paudel, an esteemed filmmaker from Nepal known for directing "Bulbul," Nepal's 2019 official entry for the Academy Awards.

Paudel shared that witnessing the struggles faced by Bhutanese refugees triggered the need to tell their story. The significant growth of Akron's Bhutanese and Nepali populations over the past decade attracted Paudel to the city, highlighting the vibrant cultural contributions these communities have made. However, the central focus remains on the familial conflicts experienced by three individuals within one family amidst their adaptation process.

"Rubber City" offers roles for both native South Asians and those raised in the West. Sadia Saleem, who hails from Pakistan but grew up in Canada, auditioned for a part and acknowledges the diverse experiences of various immigrant communities. She highlights how the circumstances, origins, and physical appearances of different groups influence their assimilation experiences in the United States.

Despite language barriers, individuals like Lashila Howell, who doesn't speak Nepali, believe in the universal language of visual storytelling. They are confident that the film's message will transcend linguistic boundaries and connect with audiences on a deeper, visual level. Prakash Naubag, another contributor to the film from Nepal, emphasizes the film's significance in allowing South Asians in America to recognize and relate to their own stories.

Currently in production, "Rubber City" involves a mix of volunteers and professional staff. Upon completion of principal photography, Paudel aims to secure funds for post-production processes, including editing the footage to create the final cinematic piece.
